Any Ready to Use DBMS with HMG for my Clients

Hi All Friends,

Is there any ready to use DBMS which will work with HMG - which my clients can install and maintain by themselves, as they do with dbf I want to be clear more. Actually I want a DBMS system which will 1) work with HMG and 2) My users can install and maintain it by themselves (without disturbing me too much )
I shall be very happy if there is a way to do the above with MYSQL

MySQL is enough for this, I think.

Actually I am working on that Sudip. I am in the process of creating my own Backup/Restore coding. By using these codes, one need not use MySQL Administrator.

As an alternative, we can consider SQLite also. However, it is not well on networking, I think. It can be useful, if you give the software only for one/few systems. Total SQL functionality would be embedded inside the HMG application itself. All tables would reside inside a single database file.

Sudip,Can u plz. be more specific?

Recently I've seen couple of small softwares made in Access (2000 I suppose). The installer installs runtime library of Access 2000 (if they r not available in your system) and on the fly software starts without the requirement of any backend database installation. Their seems to be no separate entity of EXE & Database - just the Access Applicaiton. I'm citing this example from a govt. 's website for maintaing P.F (provident fund). They've decided to select Access I think for the easy deployment process with least maintainence, user usually unbale to access raw data, and the massive use of MS-OFFICE in India.

Now if u use MySQL - I suppose you need one customized installer to automate the whole process of installing MySQL. So that even the end user can install it.

A few years back I've made such installer for installing MSDE (the free version of MS-SQL). It use to check all the pre-requisites for MSDE, already installed or not etc

You can have one Single Installer which will install first the back end (the database), then the front end (your software). It takes lot of time to automate the whole process, but if achieved makes life easy for the developer.

Automate installation of MySQL - interesting has any1 made such installer? I may try though not have seen MySQL for years!!!!!!!

Rathi: I am very happy to know that you are working with backup and restore procedure of MySql. I am waiting to hear some good news from you I have 2 queries. Is there any way so that our clients can install MySql by themselves? Again, is MySql free even for commercial use?

Swapan: I used Access for some years back. But, I am not very much happy with Access. I am looking for an open source solution, which will 1) work with HMG and 2) My clients can install it without my help. Please don't misunderstand me. I want a solution will be as easy as using dbf with lower data corruption. Again, I found problem to check whether a particular table exists in an Access database with HMG (actually, I am not comfortable with MS ADO codes ) I want some easier method to do it.

Again, I prefer small installer size, which IMHO, one of the main advantages of HMG over VB.

I never tried with SQLite (mentioned by Rathi). I have no idea, whether it will be suitable for small business house

Hi Sudip,

Regarding your first question, yes, MySQL can be installed easily by anybody. As far as using MySQL for commercial purpose, YES, MySQL community server is open source. It can be used for commercial purpose, since it is licensed as GPL and the Enterprise Edition just adds support in maintenance and migration.

You can get a comparison from the MySQL website, between Community and Enterprise editions.

I'm also looking for such an alternative. It seems MySQL can be "the choice", but currently I'm yet to explore it.

DBFs hold so much less footprint, there's no "headache" of backend installation or configuration. With the mega sizes of now-a-days RDBMS, the dbfs are now-a-days like small text files - very easy to maintain with the front end (HMG) but with the drawback of without security and not compact in a single database.

Eagerly waiting for a solution to the query raised by u.... MySQL or ......

Rathi: Thank you. Your answer helps me a lot.

Swapan: We (at least both of us) are standing at a very crucial point. Which DBMS shall we use in our future project? The answer is not very easy.

For MySql I like the power of TMySql. But, it will be easier if MySql RDD can update database with xbase commands.

I found problem to check whether a particular table exists in an Access database with HMG (actually, I am not comfortable with MS ADO codes ) I want some easier method to do it.

Suddenly a simple (quick and dirty ) solution to this problem came to my mind.
