Hi All,
A frequent question across years is "what are the differences between Harbour and xHarbour", well here they are, directly from Harbour CVS...
EDIT: This is a 'live' link to xhb-diff document in Harbour repository at SourceForge:

Re: HARBOUR / XHARBOUR DIFFERENCES
Thanks a lot Roberto.
It is so huge and more of technical in nature.

East or West HMG is the Best.
South or North HMG is worth.
...the possibilities are endless.

Re: HARBOUR / XHARBOUR DIFFERENCES
Hello Master Roberto,
Excellent!!! This knowledge will be very helpful for our proposed book also
Yes Rathi, it's huge. I couldn't finish it in one go
May be it's not the right place to post this, but I can't resist myself to share something regarding my Harbour and xHarbour experience. I am one of the very few persons who uses both compilers. But my xHarbour version is very old due to some technical reasons regarding GTWVW library.
A few months ago I met Mr. Pritpal Bedi, one of the Harbour Developers and creator of GTWVG library. He wrote me, initially he made his library (GTWVG) in xHarbour but later he discontinued it with xHarbour and started using Harbour ONLY, as some features of his library cannot be supported by xHarbour.
I know at least one very good Minigui software developer, Mr. Mel Smith, who works with xHarbour and Minigui Extended. But, I couldn't run Minigui Ext in xHarbour may be due to older version of my xHarbour and I am very happy with Harbour
Again, I also noticed that xHarbour is more commercially oriented. And also found many posts containing advertisement of commercial products in xHarbour group, eg., Visual xHarbour, Advantage Database Server, Xalier etc. I didn't find any posts having advertisement of commercial products in HMGForum, HMG User groups till now
I came to Harbour/xHarbour world about 1.5 years ago. At that time I found something which gave my old Clipper apps a new life INSTANTLY - that was old xHarbour+gtwvw
Sorry for sharing my personal views.
With best regards.
Sudip

Re: HARBOUR / XHARBOUR DIFFERENCES
Thanks a lot for sharing your experience Sudip.
I have no experience with xHarbour.
It was really an amazing experience when I had compiled and run successfully my clipper based source codes in Harbour without much of modifications.

First Roberto Sir, thanks for this thread.sudip wrote:Hello Master Roberto,

I would say I discovered xHarbour while googling 1 year back. It was exciting to discover such a product. Then in xHarbour forum I found Sudip. As I saw one Indian clipper programmer, I just sent one email to him with my cell no. Sudip called me up, and to our utter surprise we were old mates - from same college & during our initial professional career we also came close.
Now though I only use HMG! But yes I don't mind the xHarbour's approach - one has to survive commercially.

Swapan
