Good idea.
This makes app independent from reinstallation of windows.
Some cards has possibility to set mac-address.
But user-hacker must know, how identyfication key is built...

Thanks a lot Claudio.
East or West HMG is the Best.
South or North HMG is worth.
...the possibilities are endless.

Hello Rathi,

Thanks a lot for the information, which agrees with my belief "a better lock means harder to break it!!!" ;)

My very humble good old solution for copy protection :-
1) I hard code my client's name into each software (mainly Inventory and Sales A/c software). So that each and every report, including sale bills generated from the software will always print the ACTUAL client's name.
2) And names are in ASCII forms, not in text mode (harder to break).

Now, my clients can copy it to any computer, as long as "they" use it.

I know this is very primitive method. But this works :)

Moreover, if I think in a different way, when somebody steals my software, they are actually advertising it ;)

Again, software development is not a one time job. IMHO, it's a continuous process of interaction between the user and the developer. So, when somebody steals my software, they are actually loosing main part of it :o

I have some clients, who previously copied my software illegally and manged to break the code. But, later understood it would be more beneficial for them to use the actual software to get help from me (especially, if anything goes wrong).

Sorry, for the long message :(

With best regards.

Sudip

Hi Suddip

I agree 100% with you.
The best thing that can happen to us is that our software becomes massive.
Piracy is a way to do it without spending a dime.
MS-Window's best worldwide advertising campaing has allways been illegal copies.
People not willing to pay for your software does not see any value on it neither on your support, so your are not really loosing any sales because of piracy.

Brgds.

I agree with you.

It's very clear that more important that the software, is its support and customization.

IMHO, sooner or later the software will not be sold anymore. Such 'business model' will be definitively changed by support contracts that will be include the software installation/provision and maintenance.

In such context, copy protection techniques will not be needed anymore.

Roberto

Please, feel free to write/express anything you want here.

I always use any opportunity available to try to expand the forum beyond the 'programming talking'.

Any help on that is welcome :)
Regards/Saludos,

Roberto
